Speculum Orum: Shackled to the Dead is M. Lamar's slave ship requiem for those lost in the middle passage. It premiered in 2012 at Cathedral of St John The Divine. The title track along with Trying to Leave My Body and Deep River (coda) were recorded live at the Cathedral. In addition to songs from the requiem this release also features studio recording of Swinging Low, Negro Antichrist and Unloved and Unwanted. Other longs from the requiem featured on the album are The Dark Ship Moves, and In The Belly of The Ship. Bryce Hackford performs synth and tape work for the record and Matthew Robinson of the Band Opal Onyx is featured on cello on In The Belly Of The Ship, Negro Antichrist, The Dark Ship Moves, and Unloved and Unwanted. Some might remember his cello performance on Carrying from the Funeral Doom Spiritual record with Hunter Hunt-Hendrix.
